How to cancel

Online: log in to TMR online services with your customer reference number and select the vehicle to cancel.
In person: visit a TMR customer service centre with ID and the plates.
Plates: standard plates are returned or declared lost/destroyed; personalised plates can go on a confinement for later use.

How the refund is calculated

TMR refunds the registration fee and traffic improvement fee for the remaining whole months of the term, minus a $22.00 administration fee (from 1 July 2026). The CTP portion for remaining full months is refunded separately by your CTP insurer. Cancel early in the month where possible — partial months are not refunded.

Off the road but keeping the car?

If the vehicle is simply parked up, remember that once cancelled it cannot be driven at all — even to a mechanic — without an unregistered vehicle permit ($40.20/day plus CTP), and re-registering later requires a safety certificate and new registration application. For short gaps, staying registered is often cheaper than the round trip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel my rego online in QLD?

Yes. Registration can be cancelled through TMR online services with your customer reference number, or in person at a customer service centre. Number plates must be returned or declared lost/destroyed as part of cancellation.

Do I get a refund when I cancel?

Yes — the unused whole months of registration and traffic improvement fee are refunded, less an administration fee of $22.00. Unused CTP is refunded by the insurer for the remaining full months.

When does cancelling make sense?

Selling a car for parts, writing one off, exporting it, or taking a vehicle off the road long-term. If the vehicle might return to the road soon, weigh the refund against the cost and inspection that re-registering may require.

What happens to my plates?

Standard plates are surrendered to TMR at cancellation. Personalised plates can be kept on a plate confinement so you can use them on another vehicle later.
