CTP in 60 seconds

Compulsory third party insurance covers injuries to people when an insured vehicle causes an accident — medical costs, care and compensation for the injured party. In Queensland it's collected with your rego, so registration and CTP always travel together. It never covers vehicle or property damage; for that you need separate comprehensive or third-party property cover.

Current Class 1 premiums

For cars and station wagons (Class 1), annual premiums currently range from $411.80 to $424.80 across the licensed insurers — Allianz, QBE and Suncorp — with the range capped by the Motor Accident Insurance Commission. Motorcycles with pillion capacity (Class 13) pay $442.60. The exact premium for any class and insurer is published in MAIC's premium calculator.

Choosing or switching insurer

You nominate a CTP insurer when first registering, and can switch to another at any renewal by indicating the new insurer — no forms, no cost. Since MAIC keeps the spread narrow (about $13/year on Class 1 right now), most drivers pick based on the insurer's claims service rather than price. The premium lands in the same rego bill either way; see how it fits into the total in the rego cost breakdown.

The NIISQ levy

Your rego also funds the National Injury Insurance Scheme Queensland, which provides lifetime care for people catastrophically injured on Queensland roads regardless of fault — one of the reasons CTP in QLD costs what it does.

Frequently asked questions

Is CTP included in QLD rego?

Yes. Queensland bundles the compulsory third party premium into your registration payment, so a car with current rego always has CTP cover.

Who are the CTP insurers in Queensland?

You choose your insurer from the licensed providers regulated by the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) — currently Allianz, QBE and Suncorp. You can nominate a different insurer when you renew.

What does CTP actually cover?

CTP covers your liability for injuries to other people in an accident that is your fault — pedestrians, passengers, other drivers. It does not cover damage to vehicles or property; that requires separate comprehensive or third party property insurance.

How much is CTP in QLD?

For Class 1 (cars and station wagons) the premium currently sits between $411.80 and $424.80 per year depending on the insurer. Motorcycles and other classes have their own rates set within MAIC limits.

Can I save by switching CTP insurer?

The spread between insurers is small — currently about $13 a year on Class 1 — because MAIC caps the range. Switching is free at renewal time; just nominate the new insurer.
