Any time an unregistered vehicle must travel on a road: getting a newly bought unregistered car home, driving to a safety certificate inspection or repairer, moving a project car, or relocating a vehicle whose rego was cancelled or lapsed. The permit specifies the journey and dates and bundles CTP so you're insured for injuries during the move.
Cost and how to apply
The fee is $40.20 per day plus CTP for the class and period (from 1 July 2026). Apply through TMR online services or at a customer service centre with the vehicle details, purpose and dates; the permit issues electronically. Unused permits can be refunded in some circumstances.
UVP or just re-register?
If the vehicle will return to regular use, compare the round trip: a multi-day UVP plus a safety certificate plus new registration versus keeping registration alive in the first place.
