What makes up your QLD rego bill
Registration fee
The TMR charge for keeping the vehicle registered, set by cylinder count — from $303.10 (1–3 cyl and electric) up to $1,002.35 (9–12 cyl).
Traffic improvement fee
A flat $67.25 levy on private light vehicles ($73.00 for motorcycles) that funds Queensland road projects.
CTP insurance
Compulsory third party cover, bundled into rego in Queensland. Class 1 premiums currently run $411.80–$424.80 depending on your insurer. How CTP works.
Shorter terms: 3 and 6-month rego
You can register for 3 or 6 months instead of 12, but TMR applies a surcharge to terms under 12 months to cover the additional registration notices. That means two 6-month renewals always cost a little more across the year than a single 12-month renewal — shorter terms are a cash-flow tool, not a discount. For your exact short-term price, the official TMR quote tool calculates it in a minute, or estimate 12-month figures with our rego calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How much is rego in QLD for 12 months?
For a private 4-cylinder car — the most common vehicle in Queensland — 12-month registration currently totals $864.50 to $877.50 including the registration fee ($385.45), traffic improvement fee ($67.25) and Class 1 CTP insurance ($411.80–$424.80). Smaller and larger engines pay less or more; see the full table above.
Why did my rego go up this year?
Queensland indexes registration fees at the start of each financial year (1 July), and CTP premiums are also reviewed regularly. The figures on this page reflect the schedule that took effect on 1 July 2026.
Is 6-month rego cheaper than 12-month in QLD?
Not overall. A shorter term splits the cost for cash-flow, but TMR adds a surcharge for terms under 12 months to cover the extra notices, so across a full year two 6-month renewals cost slightly more than one 12-month renewal.
Does rego cost depend on the car's value in QLD?
No — ongoing registration is charged by cylinder count, not value. Vehicle value only matters for registration duty, a separate one-off tax paid when a vehicle is registered or transferred to you.
What is the traffic improvement fee?
A fixed levy included in every Queensland registration ($67.25 for private vehicles) that funds road building and maintenance. It applies on top of the base registration fee and CTP premium.
