Lost or stolen plates
Report to police first (stolen plates are a common precursor to fuel theft and toll fraud in your name), then order replacements from TMR for $36.25. New combinations are issued when plates are stolen, which protects you from offences committed on the old ones.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a replacement number plate in QLD?
A standard plate issue or replacement costs $36.25 (from 1 July 2026). Report lost or stolen plates to police and TMR before ordering replacements.
Can I keep my personalised plates when I sell the car?
Yes — personalised plates belong to you, not the vehicle. Move them to another vehicle or hold them on a plate confinement; transferring ownership of a personalised plate to another person costs $122.10.
Where do I buy personalised plates?
Personalised Plates Queensland (PPQ) sells custom combinations and styles, with prices varying by format. Standard-issue plates come from TMR with registration.
Do I need new plates when buying a used car?
No — standard plates stay with the vehicle through a transfer. You only pay for plates when replacing lost/damaged ones or choosing personalised plates.
