What the transfer costs
Two amounts apply: the flat transfer fee of $33.65 (from 1 July 2026), and vehicle registration duty, a percentage of the vehicle's dutiable value that scales with cylinder count — typically 3% for 1–4 cylinders, 3.5% for 5–6 and 4% for 7+ on most passenger vehicles. Duty is usually the larger amount: on a $20,000 4-cylinder car it's about $600. The rego itself stays with the vehicle, so whatever registration period remains transfers with it — check how long is left with a free rego check.
